From Concept To Launch

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new website cost? How long will it take to get a new website? Do you only create WordPress websites? Do I have to be local to work with you? Will I be able to update the site myself when it’s finished? Will you maintain my site for me? Will my website be mobile-friendly?

How much does a website design cost?2021-07-10T12:20:48-04:00

Most of our sites run in the $2000 – $10000 range, but can be more or less depending on your business requirements.

Here’s why: every website is unique; we design and develop custom websites specifically suited to your  business requirements.

After discussing all the details of your project with you, we will assess your needs, and pprovide you with a quote based on that assessment.

Often, projects fall into the tiers outlined below.

– a straightforward project with no special functionality,

– a project where more functionality and interactivity is required,

– a project which may require bells and whistles such as a robust web design project with a tailor-made design solution, like an employee intranet, a forum board, a knowledge base, a museum archive etc.

How long does it take to make a website?2021-06-28T13:07:58-04:00

On average, our turnaround time is approximately 8 – 16 weeks once the paperwork has been signed.

Some people ask us, “Why does it take that long? Another company said they’ll have my website done in 2 days?”

We hear this question a lot but there’s a simple answer:

Any company that promises a website will be done in two days is a red flag warning – you should run and not look back.  You will get a cloned image of someone else’s website with just a color and title change.

As far as Westside Virtual is concerned, exact turnaround time varies based on multiple factors such as the complexity of your project’s requirements and needs; the quality of information you provide to us in your creative brief and our own project calendar. We take clients on a first-come, first-serve basis. As a general rule, we say the preliminary design will be complete and ready for you to review within 8 weeks.  However, some projects have taken six months to complete.  It all depends on the business requirements and functionality that your business needs.

Migration from development to production needs to be scheduled so that will take another one to two weeks, not because it takes that long to migrate, but it does take that long to schedule the migration with our migration experts.

All of our websites are customized, unique, and based on in-depth conversations we have with you from the start of the design phase and throughout the design phase about your vision, your mission, your product, and your goals.

Building something of quality that is unique to your specific taste and requirements takes time. Anyone who promises to finish your site in a couple of days is not building you a custom website – they are simply cloning a website that’s already built and are just changing the colors, phone number and logo.

Please note that any milestone that requires your action, such as your approval for design mock-ups or web design changes or PDF files, and is not acknowledged on time, will directly affect the time frame.

How much do you charge for web hosting?2021-04-08T15:08:32-04:00

We are not a web hosting company so we do not provide web hosting services. We will, however, gladly help you select a reputable web hosting company.

My business is unique. Will you be able to design a website that is unique to me?2021-06-28T13:07:58-04:00

Absolutely! Over 80 percent of business owners research other businesses that provide services or products. With an online presence, you can provide samples, references, location, hours of operation and more, instantaneously from your website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year long.

Can you train me to update my WordPress site?2021-04-17T10:00:36-04:00

Yes, we offer live remote training. The sessions typically last one hour during which time we’ll go over the basics of WordPress and the details of updating your website.

Please note that this service is generally only available for websites Westside Virtual has built or designed but we would be happy to train small groups for you via a Zoom conference for $250 at our consultant rate of $110/hr.

I’m on a budget. Do you have any low cost website design options?2021-06-28T13:07:58-04:00

We understand that a custom website is a big investment and not all businesses have the budget. We offer a budget package which will help get you online and it will look good too. Learn more about our budget web design package.

I just bought a ready-made WordPress Theme. Can you customize it for me?2021-06-28T13:07:59-04:00

All of our sites are customized.  We did not spin out sites using the same disk image and then changing a font here or a color there.  Every one of our designs are 100% customized and unique.  In general, we design our sites on top of Premium WordPress Theme authors that have been vetted by the WordPress Open Source community and are sold on ThemeForest, the #1 Source Marketplace for Premium Website Templates.  We can customize premium templates but on the front-end only.  We are fluent in html/css which is why our websites look so awesome.

Generally speaking, we will not work with older WordPress Themes that have been abandoned y their authors or have not been updated by their developers to work with the latest versions of WordPress.

While we can certainly understand their appeal, customizing a ready-made theme can often be a much more complicated task than one would think and in some cases the costs can rival that of having a from-scratch custom design

What payment methods do you accept?2021-04-08T15:37:00-04:00

After we mutually agree to work together and the paperwork is signed, we will invoice you by email.  We prefer payment by check payable to Westside Virtual, Inc. or payments made through Zelle.

What is a Website Audit?2021-04-17T10:00:52-04:00

We are always ready to help and we welcome clients who are looking for a long term relationship with a dedicated website design company.

To see if we are a good match, we first like to do a Website Audit to become familiar with your website, look at its back end to see how it was built and any potential issues that can arise going forward.

With the Website Audit we require a login name and password so that we can research the back end of your website’s framework.  We make a list of issues to fix and suggestions for improvement needed in order to more forward in our engagement process.  Upon completion, we prepare a report in Excel Spreadsheet format.

Our Website Evaluation Audit starts at a fixed 4-hour fee of $600 and $110 per additional hour.

Who will write the content (text) for each of the pages on my website?2021-04-08T15:45:54-04:00

The client is responsible for writing the content/copy/text for the website. If you need content-writing assistance, we are happy to send you a new proposal where our rate is $125/hour or $35 for first 250 words per page, additional words at $0.15 cents per word.

We also partner with content writers if needed and those prices may vary from what is mentioned above.

What is WordPress?2021-06-28T13:07:59-04:00

WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and content management system (CMS) powered by PHP and MySQL.

It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system that is SEO-friendly.

What is a WordPress Theme?2021-04-17T10:00:04-04:00

A WordPress Theme is a collection of files that work together to produce a graphical interface with an underlying unifying design for a website. These files are called template files. A Theme modifies the way the site is displayed, without modifying the underlying software.

You can choose from over a thousand free themes from the WordPress Theme Directory or invest in a premium, or paid themes from <strong>themeforest.net</strong>

A premium WordPress theme is a high-quality, feature-rich, search engine optimized WordPress web template built for customers who want a polished design.

Westside Virtual has extensive experience working with various themes from various companies.

The advantages of premium themes are like those of premium plugins. Premium themes usually have a reliable code base and offer support if something goes wrong.

Some premium themes operate more like web design software, allowing designers like Westside Virtual to design unique one-of-a-kind page layouts.

Premium themes can run anywhere from $19 to $100+ and are sold with a license. If we buy the license, we own the license.  Transfer of licenses is usually impossible because the WordPress community has not engaged in license transfers. No one took it on and Automattic, the company that owns WordPress, washed their hands of the whole deal so its up to the designers and the clients to figure it out.  If you buy the license, we will direct you how to purchase it and once you obtain the license, we will install it on your site or on  the developmment site.

The client is responsible for payment of the renewal of the support for theme each year.

Unless otherwise noted, a purchased theme includes a six-month or one-year membership subscription to downloads, updates and support from the company that the theme was purchased from. This means you get immediate access to all new versions and features released for your product(s) during your subscription year, plus ticketed support from the theme’s Help Desk.

The membership model is how companies provide top-tier support, maintain their products as WordPress updates it’s own products, and to provide continued development for new versions and features. After the one-year mark, your theme or plugin is still yours to use and keep, but we recommend renewing your subscription to have continued access to downloads, support, updates and new features

What is Front End Development?2021-04-17T09:59:45-04:00

The front end of a website is responsible for collecting input in various forms from the visitor and processing it to conform to a specification the back end can use. The front end is an interface between the visitor and the back end. The front end is also where all the beautiful design takes place and this is what we do the best.
